Q and A

Q: I’ve been exercising for a month, and haven’t lost a kilogram of weight, yet my clothes seem looser. Why?

A: Too many people still use the scale as the only guide to weight change.

But the scale only tells you how much of you there is and doesn’t tell you how much fat or muscle you have.

When you exercise regularly, your body becomes better adapted to burning fat and you build up muscle tissue.

Muscles weigh more than fat, so even though the scale may not have shifted, you’ve probably lost fat and gained muscle, which is great news, because you’ll look firmer and more toned and your metabolic rate will be higher.

The best way to monitor your fat loss is to measure your waist and hips, and keep track of this every two weeks.

If you combine regular exercise with a healthy, low-fat, portion-controlled diet, you should soon see further fat loss.
